Here are some simple steps you can follow to help keep your feet in great condition.

Check your feet regularly
If you’re unable to examine your feet yourself, ask a relative or your Foot Health Practitioner/Podiatrist to help.

Wash your feet daily
Make sure you dry them thoroughly after bathing—especially between the toes. Avoid using creams or talc in between the toes, as this can trap moisture and lead to soft corns or fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.

Trim nails carefully
Don’t cut your nails too short, and avoid leaving sharp edges or nail spikes—as these are a common cause of ingrown toenails. If you cut your own nails, always smooth the edges with an emery board.

Moisturise with the right cream
Use a good-quality foot cream to keep the skin soft and supple. Ordinary body moisturisers aren’t effective enough because the skin on your feet is thicker. Foot creams containing urea are especially beneficial for dry skin.

Choose footwear that fits well
Shoes should be comfortable with plenty of room in the toe box to avoid irritation. Corns and callus often develop due to friction or pressure from poorly fitting footwear.

Rotate your footwear
Try not to wear the same shoes every day. Allow 24 hours for shoes to fully dry out before wearing them again. Damp, warm environments inside shoes allow fungal spores to thrive—leading to athlete’s foot and other infections.

Diabetic? Get checked regularly
If you have diabetes, make sure you have your feet checked by a Chiropodist or Foot Health Practitioner every 4–8 weeks.
